What a small business site actually needs
- Storage: Most small business sites (5-20 pages, some images) run comfortably on 10-50GB. You rarely need "unlimited" storage unless you're hosting large media libraries.
- Number of websites: If you only run one site now, don't overpay for a multi-site plan—check if upgrading later is simple first.
- Professional email: A business needs a proper @yourdomain.com inbox, not a free Gmail address. Check how many mailboxes are included before paying extra.
- Speed: Slow load times cost customers. Look for SSD storage and a content delivery network (CDN) at minimum.
- Security & SSL: A free SSL certificate should be standard, not an add-on. Check what additional security monitoring costs.
- Backups: Daily automatic backups matter more for a business site than a personal one—downtime costs money.
The renewal trap
Many hosts advertise a low first-year price that jumps significantly at renewal. For a business, budget based on the renewal price, not the introductory offer—that's the number you'll actually pay long-term.
When to upgrade
If your site is a core part of how customers find or contact your business, it's usually worth paying for managed or higher-tier hosting rather than the cheapest shared plan. The cost difference is often small compared to lost business from downtime.
